Emma Sykes, the inspiration behind 'Join in Music'

Emma has been a Primary School teacher and Music Co-ordinator for over 16 years in Lancashire. After 3 years as a Deputy Head in Bradford, Emma enjoyed the opportunity to teach music full time to all year groups from Nursery to Year 6, and she realised that music teaching was where her true vocation lay.

Emma plays a range of instruments from the woodwind, string and percussion families, and she specialises in brass instruments. She has played cornet, horn, baritone, euphonium, trombone and tuba with her brass band, and is now their Musical Director.

Whilst in Lancashire, Emma was an enthusiastic supporter of the Pendle Schools' Festival. They hold an annual, week-long, non-competitive performance event covering music, drama, art and dance, in which all Pendle Schools are invited to take part. She helped to organise and run the event, as well as leading and conducting the Massed Music performances which included the choir of up to 120 primary pupils, percussion and recorder groups.

'Join in Music' will begin offering workshops from September 2007.

Emma says:

“I believe all children should have the opportunity to join in with music making and performance. It provides a unique combination of visual, auditory and kinaesthetic activities, as well as being great fun!”

The opportunity to present a concert for the rest of the school and parents is included in all workshops.

CHILDREN'S MUSIC WORKSHOPS

  • NAME THAT INSTRUMENT - an introduction to a range of instruments from the brass, woodwind and string families, with the fantastic opportunity to try out some actual instruments.
  • BLOW YOUR TRUMPET - more specific introduction to the world of brass instruments, also with the great opportunity to try out several of the actual instruments. Several hosepipes feature in the concert!
  • PLAY THAT RHYTHM - a class set of drums is provided in this workshop, which covers reading notation, playing and creating rhythms. During the day, we collaboratively develop the pieces for the performance.
  • TUNE IN - children will learn to play a range of tunes in two or more parts on our full class set of glockenspiels and xylophones. The concert ends with a rousing chorus of 'Yellow Submarine'.

HISTORY BASED WORKSHOPS

  • THE MUSIC OF WW2 - an enjoyable exploration of the music of the era, showing how important music was to the people living through this difficult time. For the concert, we learn and add actions to a range of songs from the time.
  • MUSIC SINCE 1948 - linking the exciting musical developments through the decades with some of the significant social and cultural changes. One song from each decade is presented in the concert.
  • VICTORIAN MUSIC HALL - an introduction to the music and stage characters of this fascinating period of history. The concert features monologues as well as some of the less bawdy songs from the Music Halls!
