BLOW YOUR TRUMPET workshop

AIM: To learn how brass instruments work, to recognise their sound, and to experience playing and performing on the brass instruments.

An exciting, practical introduction to the world of brass instruments. Pupils will learn some of the science behind how this family of instruments works, listen to the instruments played live, and have the unique opportunity to try them out.

The day begins with the whole group watching an explanation and model of the scientific principles on which brass instruments operate, using everyday household equipment. A range of brass instruments are then played ?live? to demonstrate the different sounds they can make.

For the childrens music workshops, classes will be divided into 3 groups, for a carousel of activities. Two groups carry out listening and paper based activities provided by 'Join in Music' but supervised by school staff, and the group working with Emma Sykes will have the exciting experience of touching and playing the brass instruments at first hand.

The basics of how to blow an instrument will be shown, and every child will love the memorable chance to produce a note from the instrument of their choice.

In the afternoon, the whole class will work together to produce a concert for their parents and the school. Every member of the group will play in the concert, demonstrating the new brass instrument skills they have learned during the day.

What do pupils / parents / staff say?

  • I learned the difference between brass instruments, and how to play a hose pipe!
  • I learned about the different parts of the instruments. The buttons are called valves, the thing you blow through is called a mouthpiece.
  • I enjoyed playing the trumpet. It was good because it was hard the first time I tried it, but then I did it better.
  • The best part of the day was performing in front of the school.
  • I have done a lot of new things like playing new instruments that I have never played before and I've never seen a tuba.

Format: Music Workshop and Concert

  • Aimed at KS1 and KS2
  • Supports QCA Units: Music 8, 11, 13, 15, Science 5F
  • Up to 34 pupils can be accommodated per day.
  • Needs two spaces - one can be a hall where the concert will take place.
  • 1 teacher required, plus any extra staff necessary to support the involvement of specific pupils

However, if payment is received in full on the day of the workshop or before, the children attend FREE (i.e. the fee of ?1 per child is waived).

A second or subsequent workshop booked by the same school or group for the same term will have a discount of ?50.

For Christmas!

The demonstration tunes played will be on a Christmas / seasonal theme, including those used in the concert.

Organisation of the day

The initial presentation starts the day, for the whole group taking part in the workshop. The group will then be split into 3 for the morning, with a carousel of activities all provided by Join in Music. For the afternoon, the whole group will work together to create the concert presentation, which will start 30 minutes before the end of the school day. Actual timings will be adjusted to fit in with your normal school day ? see booking form. Please contact Join in Music directly with any questions or other adaptations you would like to make.

Flexibility

If you have groups with specific requirements (e.g. Gifted and Talented, Special Needs, longer projects or Holiday Clubs), please contact Emma to discuss these. All of the workshops listed are given in outline only, so that they can be adapted as much as necessary for the audience and time available. Alternative ideas can also be incorporated.

CRB checks and supervision of pupils

Emma Sykes has a current CRB certificate, which can be seen on the day. However, she would not expect to be on her own with children at any point, as adults from each school are needed to supervise their children at all times. Emma needs to ensure that instruments and equipment are used safely and appropriately.
