VICTORIAN MUSIC HALL workshop

AIM: To experience the music and culture of the Victorian music halls, performing some of the songs.

DVD clips and clothing from this fascinating period are used to enhance enjoyment and understanding in the learning of some well-known songs and monologues.

On the first day the group looks at DVD clips showing aspects of the history, music and culture of the Music Halls.

They learn about some of the best known performers, and enjoy learning to sing some of the best-known songs from the time.

The second day will be spent improving the singing and organising a concert at the end of the day for parents and the school, who will love to share in the presentation of the songs and monologues from this era. We also learn to play one song on glockenspiels / xylophones (provided free by 'Join in Music').

Format: 2-day workshop for a group of up to 90 pupils, with a CONCERT at the end of the second day

  • Aimed at Upper KS2
  • Supports QCA Units: History 11, 12, Music 8, 15, 20
  • Up to 90 pupils working together for both days
  • Day 1 needs a space with interactive whiteboard / DVD player, and day 2 needs a performance space for the concert (e.g. school hall).
  • 1 teacher required per 30 pupils, plus any extra staff necessary to support the involvement of specific pupils
  • All resources provided FREE, including xylophones / glockenspiels and DVDs.

For Christmas!

Did you know that many of our Christmas traditions and carols were actually introduced by the Victorians? Over the two days we will explore many of these traditions, including the Christmas tree, Santa Claus and a dramatisation of how the carol 'Silent Night' came to be written. One carol will be played on glockenspiels (provided free) and the group will learn to sing several others.

Parents, staff and the pupils will love the resulting concert, which will finish with a rousing chorus of 'The Twelve Days of Christmas' for everyone to join in!

Organisation of the days

Actual timings will be adjusted to fit in with your normal school day. Please contact Join in Music with any questions or other adaptations you would like to make.

Flexibility

If you have groups with specific requirements (e.g. Gifted and Talented, Special Needs, longer projects or Holiday Clubs), please contact Emma to discuss these. All of the workshops listed are given in outline only, so that they can be adapted as much as necessary for the audience and time available. Alternative ideas can also be incorporated.

CRB checks and supervision of children

Emma Sykes has a current CRB certificate, which can be seen on the day. However, she would not expect to be on her own with children at any point, as adults from each school are needed to supervise their children at all times. Emma needs to ensure that instruments and equipment are used safely and appropriately.
