PLAY THAT RHYTHM workshop

AIM: To read and play beats and rhythms, creating pieces, and working as part of a team to perform the pieces we create.

A full class set of drums is provided FREE. Children have great fun learning to read, create and perform rhythms.

Pupils learn how to play the different drums correctly, and love learning to read and play a variety of rhythms accurately, using PROPER musical notation!

The group works together to play different rhythms against one another, and the final form of the pieces is created collaboratively as we go along.

Groups will have the opportunity to create their own rhythm patterns within a given structure, allowing both knowlegeable and inexperienced pupils to have a go. Emma may record the work from time to time, to appreciate, evaluate and improve the musical effects we are developing.

There will be a short performance of the finished pieces at the end of the day, for the school and/or parents, who will love to hear the music the children have created during the workshop. It is well established that pupils gain confidence and increase in self-esteem by taking part in concerts such as this.

Following this workshop, follow up lesson plans will be given FREE to participating staff. These will cover ways in which the rhythm work can be extended and developed, using whatever untuned percussion instruments are available at your school.

What do staff / pupils / parents say?

  • The children learned that music can be fun, that everyone can have a 'go' and enjoy it. They learned about listening carefully, rhythm, interpretation of symbols, and working together to produce a beautiful sound.
  • I didn't have a best part of the day because I enjoyed the whole day.
  • I enjoyed the part when we performed and learnt how to read music. I learned a lot. It was brilliant.
  • I enjoyed seeing the children playing together with such deep concentration and enjoyment.
  • I enjoyed seeing the pride on the children's faces - they were so pleased to be performing what they'd learnt.

  • Aimed at KS1 and KS2

For Christmas!

Are you worried about producing a concert for parents this year? Join in Music do all the preparation within one day, with no extra work for staff before the day.

The tunes used in this workshop during December will all be on a Christmas theme, and the children will have the opportunity to create their own rhythms using seasonal words and phrases, giving you an individual and unique Christmas concert.

Organisation of the day

The group will work together for the day, learning how to read rhythms and creating the pieces together.

The concert will take place at the end of the day, starting 30 minutes before the end of the school day. Parents and other classes in the school will be invited to attend.

Actual timings of the day will be adjusted to fit in with your normal school day. Please contact Join in Music with any questions or other adaptations you would like to make.

Flexibility

If you have groups with specific requirements (e.g. Gifted and Talented, Special Needs, longer projects or Holiday Clubs), please contact Emma to discuss these. All of the workshops listed are given in outline only, so that they can be adapted as much as necessary for the audience and time available. Alternative ideas can also be incorporated.

CRB checks and child supervision

Emma Sykes has a current CRB certificate, which can be seen on the day. However, she would not expect to be on her own with children at any point, as adults from each school are needed to supervise their children at all times. Emma needs to ensure that instruments and equipment are used safely and appropriately.
