Overview: A look back in time visiting popular music since 1948. A real blast from the past!
Aimed At: KS2
Supports QCA Units: History 13, Music 8, 15, 20
Format: 1 or 2 day workshop
Max Number of Pupils: Up to 95 per day
Aims
To recognise how popular music has changed since 1948, singing and performing some of the songs.
First day
Using a mixture of DVD clips and actual toys and clothes from the different periods, we look at the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s. Children see and hear about some of the important cultural, social and political events, and sing at least one song from each decade. The songs are carefully chosen to be easy to learn and fun to sing with actions, and each represents a different aspect of how popular music developed. There are also art sessions, with a colouring and a creative project based on the songs and their culture. All resources are supplied FREE on the day.
Second day
We look at the 1980’s and briefly at the 1990’s, learning songs from these decades, then spend time preparing for the concert at the end of the
day. The children are able to introduce the songs themselves, to their parents and the rest of the school. They love to dress up for
this event, and some will be able to wear the clothes brought along by ‘Join in Music’.
“ This was great for Britain Since the 1930’s.
Will definitely use the information to support
further work.”
