Overview: A hands-on sensory lesson to explore and learn to recognise a wide variety of instruments.
Aimed At: KS1, KS2
Supports QCA Units: Music 8, 11, 13, 15, Science 5F
Format: Workshop, Concert
Max Number of Pupils: Up to 34 or 150 children for a taster day
Aim
To learn how some musical instruments work, to name them and to recognise their sound, to experience playing an instrument and to perform as a group.
First session
The day begins with a fun presentation to the whole group by ‘Join in Music’. Brass, woodwind and stringed instruments are played live for the children, to demonstrate how they work and the different sounds which they make. This also includes a demonstration of the scientific principles involved and how the sound is produced on each type of instrument.
Second and
third session
The children are split into groups. Every child will have the chance to get a note out of at least two of the instruments, and they love the chance to touch and play the instruments for real! Other activities include listening, and a cut and stick challenge, with all these tasks fully resourced by ‘Join
in Music’.
Final session
We prepare for the concert, which the children will be able to present themselves. They play as a group on a combination of instruments and ‘hose-a-phones’! The rest of the school and parents will enjoy hearing the new skills the children have learned during the workshop.
