WORKSHOPS | PLAY THAT RHYTHM OR AFRICAN RHYTHM drumming

Overview: A lively lesson which involves learning to read real rhythm notation, creating our own rhythms and drumming along to CDs.

Aimed At: KS1, KS2

Supports QCA Units: Music 8, 10, 15, 16, 20

Format: Workshop, Concert

Max Number of Pupils: Up to 34

Aims
A class set of drums is supplied FREE by Join in Music for this workshop.

At the start of the day, pupils learn how to hold and to play the different drums. They enjoy singing and learning to read and play from proper musical rhythm notation, using the simple and straightforward ‘Join in Music’ system. They work creatively together to make new rhythms for the songs, combining these to create the final pieces. Learning a rhythmic accompaniment to an African or Western pop song is always a popular activity, and they also love working in groups to create their own original rhythm pieces.

By the end of the workshop, the children are able to present and perform their pieces in a concert for the rest of the school and their parents, who will be amazed at the children’s achievements within just one day!

‘Play That Rhythm’ uses familiar English words to support the rhythm playing, and in ‘African Rhythm Drumming’, pupils will learn and use some Swahili words.
